Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro

July 27, 2012
I recently wrote about how an occasional change in perspective can make all the difference and encouraged getting “off the porch” for a fresh view of the world. I can’t take credit for motivating the journey of a friend that I’m about to share with you, but I can use her experience to illustrate what’s possible when you put your mind to it!

Sheila Spence begins climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa today; the peak reaches nearly 20,000 feet! She is the wife and business partner of John Spence, a renowned business consultant who has worked closely with Austin Outdoor since 2007. Sheila keeps things organized and John on track, which isn’t a job for the faint-hearted if you know how fast John moves! Both of them are highly engaged with clients and have a servant’s heart for their community. Well, Sheila has taken that dedication to an entirely new level by making this climb to benefit the Climb for Cancer Foundation.
Business is about more than selling a product or a service. Worthwhile business is about creating lasting value and giving something back to the communities we serve. In Sheila’s case, she decided to do more than simply write a check to support the important work of the Climb for Cancer Foundation. She decided to raise money by dedicating herself to actually making the climb. In her words, she’s “climbing because the Climb for Cancer Foundation is a locally run organization that helps cancer patients in areas not customarily covered by insurance or other programs. They fill the gap in many areas of need.”

Sheila’s initial goal was to raise $10,000, but her total is nearly $14,000 and climbing! (Do you see a pattern here?!) She’s crossed that threshold and now has her sights set on exceeding $15,000. Austin Outdoor is honored to contribute to her effort on our employees’ behalf, so all of you are there with her in spirit as she makes the trek upward.

It is important to note that 100% of the money Sheila raises goes to the Climb for Cancer Foundation and that she is paying all of her own expenses associated with this trip.

As you ponder Sheila’s great adventure, does it bring something to mind that you have always wanted to do? There’s no time better than the present to get off the porch and go do it!  Enjoy the Journey!
