Ideas Without Action

Humans have a remarkable capacity to envision ideas.  Some have the ability to test them and put them to work.  On the other hand, ideas without action are a waste of creative energy.

I’ve shared thoughts previously on the importance of a Decision to Act, but it’s the ideas of “what” to act upon that must come first.  Ideas are often the manifestation of dreams, as they move from the subconscious into conscious thought.  To take shape, however, ideas must be visualized in form of the desired outcome; that’s the point at which many good ideas get stuck and wither away.

Just as ideas are infinite, so can be the possible approaches for making them real.  Ideas stand a better chance of implementation when they:

  • Solve a problem;
  • Improve a process;
  • Advance learning;
  • Enhance an outcome;
  • Are not so numerous that they overwhelm their owner;
  • Don’t get buried under fear of failure;
  • Inspire action!

Trying to do everything, or choosing to do nothing, will result in ideas without action.  Choose those few ideas with the greatest potential and get to work making them real.

Visualizing success is a wonderful way to inspire action.  John Spence discusses the Three Watchwords of Excellence — Focus-> Discipline-> Action — which are at the heart of achieving success.  It is those same core tenets that enable ideas to be formed, shaped and implemented.  Don’t allow ideas without action to doom yours; the world deserves your best!

  • As an artist I cannot tell you how much this makes sense. One thing artists (especially myself) struggle with is that *fear of failure* … Yikes it’s the worst! Especially when its idea you’re really excited about but so easily could be shattered when the picture or image you have in your mind, doesn’t match what you see on the canvas. This is where that *determination factor*, along with planning the painting out ahead of time really helps lay a strong foundation for that work. I needed this! Thank you for your excellent writing and blog. You just never know how your words will impact others!
